AmeriCorps is a great way to gain work experience, expand your resume, and give back to your community. AmeriCorps is also a way to pay for college and receive financial aid, which is why there are so many AmeriCorps programs available. The AmeriCorps State and National program let you choose which of the numerous opportunities are right for you at this time in your life. Keep reading to learn more about these two different branches of AmeriCorp.
AmeriCorps State National is a service organization that offers members the opportunity to receive a small living stipend and education award while they give back to their communities. Members are often assigned to nonprofit organizations and schools where they serve as tutors, mentors, after school program leaders, and many other important roles. During their service, members may also have the opportunity to learn new skills and earn certifications that further their careers. Members are placed in communities across the country and can select whether they want to serve at the state or national level.
You’ll need to apply to the AmeriCorps program of your choice, attend an interview at your local AmeriCorps office, complete a background check, and commit to a term of service. Once you’re accepted into the program, you’ll go through a training period where you learn the ins and outs of your new role. You’ll also complete an individual service plan outlining your goals and objectives during your term of service. The commitment level of AmeriCorps State National is 26-28 hours per week.
As an AmeriCorps member, you’ll gain valuable work experience and have the opportunity to further your education by earning a tuition waiver and financial aid. You’ll also receive an annual living allowance and award at the end of your term of service. Because each branch of AmeriCorps has its own application process, you can choose which program is best for you. AmeriCorps State & National is perfect for those who want to make a difference in their communities and earn money for school. One of the best pros of being in AmeriCorps State and National is the ability to receive financial aid for your education. AmeriCorps members are eligible for the same financial aid opportunities as full-time students.
AmeriCorps State National is a very rigorous program that requires a significant amount of time and commitment from its members. You’ll be required to work 26-28 hours per week and complete a very thorough and rigorous application process. If you’re accepted into the program, expect a lot of paperwork and questions.
What began as a community-based program designed to tackle public problems through direct service has since grown in to a network of service programs that support the nation’s communities in times of disaster, engage AmeriCorps members in addressing root causes of critical issues, and empower the next generation of public leaders. If you’re interested in making a difference in your community and gaining valuable work experience, consider joining AmeriCorps State & National.
